On 23rd January 2019 the White Horse Theatre came to our grammar school to perform their play “The Empty Chair” for our year 6 classes. After the year 6 classes, all students of year 12 gathered in our gym in order to experience a play by Shakespeare, “The taming of the shrew”.

| “The Empty Chair” is a silly, funny and informative play about a girl named Robbie and her mother, Mrs. Rumple, living a very hectic but also slightly sad life because they have just been left by Robbie’s dad and now have to cope without him. The only thing that reminds the family of Robbie’s dad is the empty chair in which he used to sit…
I found the story very interesting because of the plot it tells, e.g. how the Rumple family is having a very normal day and at the flick of a switch it changes. It is also very funny because of how Mrs. Rumple and Robbie act and there is lots of emotion, too.
In “The taming of the shrew”, the director of the play took over the role of a sick actor, and even though he had to improvise and use his script, he did nevertheless a great job. Besides the director, there were three other actors, one of whom switched between two roles.
After the play, the actors answered some questions about their age, their careers and how they identify with their roles. Overall, the play was entertaining and it was very impressive how completely the actors took on those roles created by Shakespeare, and how they adopted fully to the rather quaint language that comes with it.
